Raspberry Pi Development
Raspberry Pi is the fastest way to validate a Linux-based product idea, and the Compute Module (CM4 and increasingly CM5) is a legitimate production platform for the class of products where its capability fits. We build Pi-based prototypes, industrial-grade CM4 carrier designs, and take products from breadboard to compliance-cleared production.

What Raspberry Pi is and when it fits.
The Raspberry Pi ecosystem has two distinct halves: the consumer Pi boards (currently Pi 4 and Pi 5), used for prototyping, education, and cost-sensitive light-industrial deployments; and the Compute Module family (CM4, CM5), designed for industrial and OEM integration with a custom carrier board. The Foundation ships committed long-term-availability roadmaps for the CM parts, making them realistic for production programs with multi-year lifecycles.
We reach for Raspberry Pi when a product needs a modest-compute Linux system, standard connectivity (USB, HDMI, Ethernet, MIPI camera), and a well-supported Debian-based userspace. We move to Jetson when the constraint is inference throughput, to purpose-built industrial SoMs (Toradex, Variscite) when the constraint is thermal envelope or 24/7 uptime with wide-temperature guarantees, and to MCU when the constraint is battery life.

Patterns and gotchas
What Raspberry Pi makes easy - and what still needs care.
Compute Module for production, not consumer Pi. The consumer Pi board has connectors, form factor and thermal design optimised for hobbyist use; it is a poor fit for a shippable product. CM4/CM5 with a custom carrier is what production designs use - and lets you design the mechanical, connectivity and power for your actual use case.
Long-term availability is real - and worth planning around. The Foundation publishes committed availability windows for Compute Module parts; we use those to justify multi-year product lifecycles. Consumer Pi board versions rotate faster; do not lock a production BOM to one.
Compliance is on you, not on the Pi. Raspberry Pi boards carry consumer-level compliance for use in their reference configuration. A product integrating a Pi (or CM4) into a custom enclosure with custom connectivity needs its own RCM/CE/FCC compliance run - the Pi’s existing certification does not transfer.
