PLC & SCADA Integration

PLCs and SCADA systems run the industrial plants we retrofit sensing and automation into - Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Beckhoff and Omron on the control side, Ignition, WinCC and FactoryTalk on the SCADA side. We integrate them, bridge them to modern IT stacks over OPC UA and MQTT Sparkplug, and add the visibility layers plants often lack.

What it is

What PLC and SCADA integration covers.

Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) are the hardened deterministic computers running discrete control on industrial plants; SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) is the layer above them handling operator interaction, alarming, historian storage and cross-plant coordination. A modern industrial deployment threads through both - and typically bridges into IT-side systems for MES, ERP, dashboards and predictive maintenance.

We reach for PLC/SCADA integration when a plant needs its existing control infrastructure connected to modern visibility, alerting or analytics without replacing what already works. Brownfield retrofits - adding sensing, dashboards or edge inference to lines that were commissioned before the operators’ laptops were made - are our most common engagement type.

Patterns and gotchas

What we watch for on brownfield PLC and SCADA projects.

Do not change what already works. Retrofits earn their trust by adding, not replacing. We add sensing and visibility while leaving the running control program untouched wherever possible - the plant team can revert with confidence, and the change management effort stays bounded.

OPC UA is the right OT/IT bridge; use it properly. A well-modelled OPC UA namespace (companion specifications where they exist) is worth more than a flat tag list. We design the address space to mirror the plant hierarchy - not the PLC memory layout - so downstream MES and dashboards inherit meaningful structure.

Network segmentation is a design decision. Modern IT tools want to talk to plant systems; that connection is where OT cybersecurity risk lives. We design segmented networks with DMZ patterns aligned to IEC 62443 principles; we do not flat-network production to corporate IT and hope.
